Lawyers Fined $5,000 After ChatGPT Invented Their Case Law
Two New York lawyers filed a brief citing more than half a dozen court decisions that did not exist, because ChatGPT made them up. When they asked the bot whether the cases were real, it said yes, so they filed them. The judge fined them $5,000 for conscious avoidance, which is the court's way of saying they should have checked.
