NHTSA Investigates Comma.ai's Openpilot After 5 Crashes Kill 3

Federal regulators opened a formal probe into Comma.ai's aftermarket hands-off driving kits after five crashes where cars running openpilot plowed into stopped or slow-moving vehicles in their own lane. Two of the crashes killed three people and 11 more were injured, and at least one fatal crash involved a third-party fork of the software.
