The Chip That Couldn't Divide

A math professor doing number theory homework discovered Intel's flagship Pentium chip flubbed certain division problems, returning wrong answers with total confidence. Intel first said it would replace chips only for customers who could prove they did serious floating-point math, then caved to public fury and recalled them all for about $475 million. The most expensive long-division error in history, caught by homework.
